In-service inspection of storage tank heating coils

The mission

A major oil company selected SQUID for a field pilot on the steam heating coils inside above-ground storage tanks at its lubricant additives plant.

The challenge

Live tanks at working temperature. Access only through two 2-inch flanges, up to 1.1 m above ground. ~25 U-bends per coil, with scale, rust and sludge.

Our approach

With our US service partner: open both flanges, flush, then a brush-centred, water-coupled UT head maps the wall. Long coils are done from both ends.

The results

Seven tanks inspected in service. One tank was refilled during the scan. One run passed 14 U-bends in 35 m, a record for SQUID.

C-scan of one heating coil: wall thickness by channel along about 35 m
C-scan along one coil. White stripes mark the bends.
